Julia Ott

The New School, New York City

Julia Ott is Associate Professor of History at the New School. She holds a PhD from Yale University and is committed to advance critical histories of capitalism. She is editor of Public Seminar, a member of the Editorial Board of Dissent, and a Co-Editor of the book series Studies in the History of U.S. Capitalism published by Columbia University Press. Her book researching how participation in financial markets became the embodiment of citizenship and entitled When Wall Street Met Main Street: The Quest for an Investors’ Democracy published by Harvard University Press in 2011 won the Vincent DeSantis Prize for the Best Book on the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. She is currently working on her next book entitled Wealth Over Work: The Origins of Venture Capital, The Return of Inequality, and the Decline of Innovation.
